The 6-7 Jets go up against the 9-4 Carolina Panthers this weekend. None of us could have predicted that either team would have meaningful games in December, but here they are. The Jets are trying to save their season by winning the next three games against the Panthers, Browns and Dolphins. Losing at this point is doom for the Jets, who are talented, yet very inconsistent. The Panthers would love to have this win, because if it happens, they would be in a tie for first in the NFC south.
This year has been a breakout season for the Panthers. Their quarterback Cam Newton has matured into a top tier player and their defensive line is as solid as ever being led by Star Lotulelei and Charles Johnson. This team could be dominant in the postseason, and even better if they can secure home field advantage.
Key Matchup: Geno Smith vs. Cam Newton. This Jets offense has struggled mightily over the past four or so weeks and they need to get it together against this top tier Panthers D. Three of the Panthers four losses have come against teams with very good defense like Seattle and New Orleans. Cam Newton cannot throw the ball away against a good defensive team like the Jets.
