The Death of Enkidu by Jack McHugh

The Death of Enkidu

When Ishtar sent a disease to kill

Enkidu got very ill.

With a shiver and with a chill

Enkidu’s heart stood very still.

When Shamhat had come to take him to the spirit land

at her Enkidu was very mad.

Then Enkidu realized what he had done

and their journey to the spirit land had begun.

There stood the lonely Gilgamesh

for death had gotten the best of him.

That was what made him grim.

Then Gilgamesh stood up to say,

“For I surely will make death pay!”
